Obese/Overweight/Fat (or whatever your prefer to say) People are too
often considered second-class citizens by others and themselves. The
educated estimate is that approximately 15% of the population is obese
(that is, 20% over the government standards for ideal body weight).
With U.S. population approaching 300 million, that means almost 45 million
people are facing discrimination, compromised health and humiliation.
Now, Jay Leno might say that it's because all of them
are gulping down "biggie sized" meals and gallons of chocolate
milk daily but it just isn't so for most. That's where the ridicule
starts and results in demoralization of the fat person. Richard
Simmons has certainly raised consciousness in an encouraging
manner and helped battle the stigma, if not the bulge. Sure, it's possible
obesity is the cause of premature death, but the question has been raised
as to whether these people don't actually die from some form (at the
very least) of isolation, if not a "broken heart." Most have
dieted from an early age and continue their journey into the black hole
of weight gain by dieting, losing, gaining back, then gaining even more
weight. It becomes a life path with seemingly no door for escape. These
people are misunderstood and often unhappy, if not unhealthy.
William Bennett, M.D., in his book, "The Dieter's Dilemma,"
explains how the metabolism slows during and after each diet attempt.
Since most people (95%, so the studies say) cannot stay on a diet for
life, they end up gaining back any weight they've lost during the diet,
and more. Then, the more they diet, the slower their metabolism becomes
and even when they "eat normally," the weight just returns
with a vengeance. Glenn Gaesser, Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology
and Professor at the University of Virginia concurs in his
book, "Big Fat Lies," DIETS DON'T WORK.
